East Coast Bias

The term ‘East Coast Bias’ refers to sports journalism. For my purposes, it’s the best way to justify my Mother’s attitude for this entire trip.

Leaving high school, I was determined to study somewhere warm. At the end of my undergraduate experience, however, I find myself in the frozen tundra of Happy Valley. Thus, the Law School search has been very heavy on favorable conditions - South Carolina, Miami, and the greater Los Angeles Area are all among my possible destinations. In fact, half of the Law Schools I applied to are out here on the West Coast.

Though I’m a little over three weeks away from making my final decision, these California schools seem to be where I assume I’d end up. The allure of LA is that it has comparable attractions to New York (another possible destination) with none of the frigid winter weather. And even though it’s barely broke 60 degrees while we’ve been here, the weather has established itself as a significant draw.

The view from my hotel window is breathtaking - the Los Angeles Skyline, the Hollywood Sign, rooftops peppered with the tops of Palm Trees. I’ve never been here, but I already want it to feel like home. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that I’m staying in Beverly Hills.

As a reactive measure, my Mom has decided to point out everything that is a stark contrast with my current living situation. Whenever someone asks what time is it, she gives us Eastern Standard Time, which she refers to as “Real World Time.” She’s very quick to point out the abundant homeless population - a clever tactic, considering my aversion to ignoring people and relative naivety toward America’s socioeconomic issues.

It is something to consider. There’s a good chance I’m nursing an East Coast Bias of my own.
